Let me catch you up on what I’ve been watching and tell you why you need to watch it too.
Marriage Story (Netflix)
Love and marriage. And divorce. Marriage Story covers it all. Charlie (Adam Driver) and Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) are in the middle of a dramatic and painful cross-country divorce that is pushing them to their creative and personal limits. We see why they fell in love with each other and why they fall out of it. Driver and Johansson are already receiving much-deserved recognition for their powerful performances and enticing chemistry.
Score: 4/ ★★★★★
Knives Out (In Theaters)
If Clue came out in 2019, it would be Knives Out. Everyone loves a good whodunnit and it’s even more fun when the “who” can come from a laundry list of famous names like Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, Don Johnson, Chris Evans and Daniel Craig. When the patriarch of a wealthy and wildly eccentric family commits suicide, a highly prestigious private investigator is hired to figure out why. When foul play is suspected, the family and their lies quickly begin to unravel.
Score: 3.5/ ★★★★★
Honey Boy (In Select Theaters)
Honey Boy is, hands down, one of the best films I have seen all year. Shia LaBeouf found therapy in writing about his life as a screenplay while he was in rehab. Honey Boy is the final product, based on LaBeouf’s life of being a child actor with a verbally and physically abusive father. It shows how what he went through so young manifested in his bad boy ways when he grew up. Simply writing this film wasn’t healing enough for Shia, as he decided he also wanted to portray his father. His performance is astounding, as is the rest of the cast; Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges, who play a young and older version of Shia. This is a film you don’t want to miss.
Score: 5/ ★★★★★
