What I’ve Been Watching: I Am Not Okay with This, Big Time Adolescence, Dave

Social distancing is upon us which means our time to binge shows and movies is NOW. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.*

*Warning – These recommendations are for adult audiences.

I Am Not Okay with This (Netflix)

I Am Not Okay with This is like if Stranger Things and a John Hughes movie had a beautiful, messed-up love child. Starring Sophia Lillis and Wyatt Oleff – both from Stephan King’s IT – this Netflix original reminds us of the complexity of high school, navigates through the loss of a parent, and the shows the paroles of discovering you can make things explode with your mind…? All of the struggles Syd (Lillis) goes through in this 30-minute, seven episode series will make you completely forget about your own.

Big Time Adolescence (Hulu)

Who would have thought Pete Davidson could actually act? Everyone loves a good coming of age film but sometimes, they aren’t always pretty. Mo (Griffin Gluck) is an average, introverted 16-year-old who just wants to get his license and ask his crush on a date. Mo’s older sisters drug-dealing ex-boyfriend, Zeke (Davidson), takes him under his destructive wing as he attempts to teach him how to make high school the best years of his life.

Dave (FX on Hulu)

Dave is loosely based on the life of comedic rapper, Dave Burd, or more famously known as Lil Dicky. In this series, Burd is trying to insert himself in the music industry and capitalize on his recent viral sensation on Youtube with his song titled “My Dick Sucks.” This show definitely isn’t for everyone and feels somewhat like a parody of itself but I surprisingly found it entertaining and easy to watch, once you get past all the penis jokes.
