My first movie review in 2017 goes to the most deserving! Hidden Figures is the incredible, untold story of three intelligent and brave African-American women who were the brains behind one of the Nations greatest achievements in history; the launch of Astronaut John Glenn into orbit.
The wickedly talented Taraji P. Henson steals the screen as Katherine G. Johnson, a brilliant and resilient mathematician who was crucial to the space program during this time. This film also stars the amazing Octavia Spencer who plays Dorothy Vaughan, a fearless leader who didn’t take “no” for an answer. Singer Janelle Monáe channels the sassy and determined aerospace engineer Mary Jackson with poise and wit. Through their contributions, all three of these women were the true “hidden figures” behind the success of NASA.
Hidden Figures is a shoo-in for a Best Picture nomination. The cinematography, the music, the costumes, the acting- it all worked beautifully on screen. After the Golden Globes, where this film was nominated for Best Original Score and Octavia Spencer was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, I am excited to see how this film will do the rest of the award show season!
This story didn’t just need to be told, it deserved it. Go see Hidden Figures, today!
