After the massive success of M. Night Shyamalan’s Split in 2016 – and the shocking, twist ending that revealed it was in fact a sequel to one of his previous films, Unbreakable (2000) – we were in for an explosive finale, bringing his super-characters face-to-face with one another. Mastermind vs. Vigilante vs. “The Beast”.
Glass comes 19 years after the events in Unbreakable but only 3 weeks after what happens in Split. You are instantly met by familiar faces including the aged-but-still-bad-ass David Dunn (Bruce Willis), his son, Joseph (Spencer Treat Clark) and the many personalities of Kevin Wendell Crumb, also known as Dennis, Patricia, Hedwig, Barry, “The Beast”, and more (played by the wickedly-talented James McAvoy). You can’t forget the mastermind behind his own undoing; Samuel L. Jackson is back as the brittle-boned brainiac.
In this whirlwind of a sequel, Dunn finds himself pursuing “The Beast” after several more teenage girls go missing. Things begin to go south when Dunn, Kevin and Mr. Glass find themselves in a mental institution, where they are going to be “treated” for their super abilities. As you could imagine, that doesn’t last long and a battle royale brews.
In classic Shyamalan fashion, the film builds with mystery and suspense, leading to a plot twist you WISH you would have thought of. We get the best of both words – plenty of flashbacks to Unbreakable and copious amounts of Hedwig, Kevin’s forever-nine-year-old personality and a fan favorite. This film trifecta is comic book gold. Will Shyamalan surprise us with more from the Unbreakable/Split universe? Only time will tell. Hopefully it won’t take 19 years this time.
Glass is now playing in theaters everywhere!
Score: ★★★½ /5
